RISON - Rison High School will host a special Alumni Night Friday, Sept. 6 at 7 p.m. during the game against Harmony Grove at George Walker Field of Champions.The special event is open to all RHS alumni. Alumni will be recognized in the stands from each decade.

UAM To Become a Leader With $16.8 Million Award for Forest Health Research

MONTICELLO - Plans are underway at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (UAM) for the construction of the Arkansas Forest Health Research Center, which will be housed within the College of Forestry, Agriculture and Natural Resources (CFANR) at the university.

Cash Statue Ceremony Is Sept. 24 in Washington

RISON - A statue of Cleveland County native Johnny Cash is scheduled to be unveiled in a ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol in Washington. The U.S. Senate formally approved the placement of the statue last Thursday, Aug. 1.

County To Consider Obstruction Ordinance

RISON - County Judge Jimmy Cummings told the Cleveland County Quorum Court Monday that he will be bring an ordinance to the floor during the September meeting that will levy fines against anyone who tries to hinder traffic along any road that is maintained by the county.

Formal Murder Charges Filed Against Posey

RISON - Travis “Joey” Posey, 45, of New Edinburg, who was arrested for the June 21 mass shooting at a Fordyce grocery store that killed four people, is facing four counts of capital murder and 11 counts of attempted capital murder after fomial charges were filed against him last week.

RISON - The Rison City Council approved naming councilman Bruce Gmbb to serve as acting mayor this week after Mayor Charles Roberts’ usual fill-in, city recorder/treasurer Rhonda Thompson, passed away last Friday.

Batting Cages Business Opens in Downtown Rison

RISON - One goal that Rison Mayor Charles Roberts had when he came into office was to see unused spaces in town be filled with either houses or businesses.That goal was achieved recently when Austin Saeler of Kingsland opened The Den, a batting cage rental business for baseball and softball.

RISON - County Assessor Barbara Reaves said she expects the Cleveland County Board of Equalization to have a busy season this year after many homeowners in the county saw the assessed value of their property double with the latest assessment completed this year.

Train and Truck Collide Near Rison

RISON - The driver of a loaded log truck that was stuck on the railroad tracks at the Harvey Benton Road crossing north of Rison managed to escape serious injuries his truck was hit by a freight train.
