The Cleveland County Quorum Court will hold a special meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the Hall-Morgan Veterans Building in Rison to approve a resolution declaring a vacancy in the office of county judge following the death of Judge Jimmy Cummings on Aug. 28.
Moderator Donnie Herring said state law required public notice, which was published Sept. 10 and 17. Once the vacancy is declared, the court has 30 days—until Oct. 22—to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of Cummings’ term, ending Dec. 31, 2026. By law, justices of the peace and their relatives are ineligible.
