Jaquis Rauls’ one-yard touchdown run with 1:26 left in the game lifted the Rison Wildcats to a 40-35 victory over the Palestine-Wheatley Patriots in a wild 8-3A conference opener Friday night at George Walker Field of Champions. The ‘Cats seemed to be cruising when Rison quarterback Kyson Walker scored on eight-yard run to give the ‘Cats a 34-14 lead with 9:58 left in the game. The Patriots, however, rallied as Palestine-Wheatley answered the Wildcats’ score with a 47-yard touchdown pass from Bryson Parker to Maddox Hoggatt, and then converted back-to-back turnovers by Rison into touchdowns. Parker hit Hoggatt for a 43-yard pass down to the Rison 1 after the first turnover leading to one score, and the two then hooked up for an 18-yard touchdown toss after the second fumble to put the Patriots up, 35-34, with 5:43 left the game. On Rison’s ensuing possession, Kyson Flecther ripped off a 30-yard run to start a drive that sparked a game winning drive that covered 80 yards in 10 plays before Rauls punched it in for the win. Rison moved to 1-0 in conference play and 2-2 overall with the win while Palestine-Wheatley fell to 0-1 and 3-1 overall....
