Bears Open South Conference Play at Strong

Body

The Woodlawn Bears (3-0) will travel to Strong to face the defending state champion Strong Bulldogs (1-0) this today (Friday, Oct. 3) to open eight-man South Conference play.

The junior high teams play at 5 p.m. followed by the varsity teams a 7 p.m. Woodlawn is off to a 3-0 start. The Bears amassed 507 yards of offense, 480 rushing, in their 66-36 win over South Side-Bee Branch two weeks ago. Quarterback Ethan Saeler and running back Griffin Manes both rushed for more than 200 yards in that game.

Bears Coach Doug Means acknowledges the speed and athleticism of the Bulldogs, who are replacing key offensive players from last year’s team but still possess dangerous talent like senior Jay Taylor and receiver Sh'darrean Williams. Means' strategy is to "hit them before they get started" on defense and utilize sustained offensive drives to control the clock and limit Strong’s possessions.
