Sheriff Department’s Warns of Law Enforcement Scam

Body

The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department posted a notice on its Facebook page this week that it received a call from a county resident who suffered a sizable cash loss due to a scam from someone posing as a sheriff’s deputy.
According to the sheriff’s department, the resident was called by two men claiming to be Cleveland County Sheriff deputies.  The men used an app to make it appear the call came from the sheriff’s department phone number.   The men claimed warrants of arrests had been issued for the resident and the men demanded a sum of money be paid in bitcoin or the resident would face arrest.
In this case, the sheriff’s department reported that the resident went to bitcoin machines in another county and sent funds to the caller.
The Cleveland County Sheriff’s Department noted that it would never call anyone demanding money. It was noted that warrants are served in person and the subject would post bond through the courts.
The sheriff’s department stated  that anytime someone calls demanding money it is usually a scam.
